The NFL Draft is fast approaching and the Oakland Raiders are set to work on the addition of a few new members to the team; even some possible new starters. And then there is of course the matter of what will be done with the current roster.
If the Raiders expect to be contenders for at least the division in 2015, their quarterback, Derek Carr, needs to up his game and hone his talents.
hes proven he has the chops as he showed promise with his rookie season performances. even though there was the absence of a running attack and his receivers ranked among the worst statistically in the NFL along with a defense fell woefully short, Carr stood out. he was the 2014 highlight on a team that needs help in almost all areas. Still he has development needs and if he intents to be the QB of their future he has to step up.
Carr has the ability to be self critical about his 2014 performance and knows what must be done if he is to lead the team in the right direction. He eluded to his shortcomings at his press conference prior to the start of off-season workouts recently. he referenced is need to make better assessments in game situations. He was clear that he was aware of missed opportunities especially in the passing attack that fell short due to his inability to accurately read some defenses. The key though is that he is self aware and that the mark of a good or promising NFL quarterback.
Carr's rookie season culminated in one thing for sure, promise. That, in and of itself, should give fans cause to be hopeful about the teams future. He realizes he has room to improve and grow as a potentially formidable leader. He seems to just be getting started. It suggests we have not come close to experiencing the best of Carr. Carr is clearly motivated to further improve his talents.
The Raiders undoubtedly need to review and make changes throughout a good chunk of their roster, Carr However is a bright light coming out of the tunnel. If the Raiders want to compete, Carr will have to become what the signs suggest he is quite capable of becoming. He's on the right path moving in the right direction and 2015 should prove to be a season to expect much from Carr.
