March 4th The early reports are Ndamukong Suh could get J.J. Watt money. That’s a huge chunk of cap space for a guy who doesn’t frequently get to the quarterback. A $100 million contract, $60 million guaranteed over the first three years, that certainly made me reconsider the Raiders signing Suh. They have so many needs. Can they really afford to spend that kind of money on a defensive tackle? But the answer is yes. The more I think about it, the more it’s clear they can’t afford to pass on the chance to get him. I’d even be willing to give Suh $25 million each of the first two years — sweeten the offer and lessen the blow on the back end of the deal. Now is when the Raiders can afford him most. They could sign Suh and still have at least $40 million to spend. (Note: There must be major kudos to general manager Reggie McKenzie for having the Raiders in this situation. It wasn’t that long ago their cap situation was an utter disaster. Now they’re in position to scoop up two major salaries this offseason.) Pairing Suh with Khalil Mack sets the Raiders’ defensive front up to be dominant for years. It would certainly help Justin Tuck, who showed he still has something in the tank. An effective front seven is especially critical since the Raiders are planning to go with their young cornerbacks next season. The ability to get pressure on the quarterback is paramount for D.J. Hayden and T.J. Carrie. Plus, the Raiders need a big splash. They had all this money last offseason and wound up having to settle for players past their prime. Signing Suh instantly makes the silver shine brighter to free agents. Want to get Randall Cobb? Julius Thomas? Devin McCourty? Suh helps that cause. by Jerry Knaak
