University of Illinois commencement took place May 16 at Memorial Stadium, and included 133 Fighting Illini student-athletes and 38 football players that were present to revieve their their degrees. That was the main graduation ceremony. a number of student-athletes also attended in their college ceremonies around campus that where held to honor those who earned their degrees.
This weekend was the finale of yet another year in which Illinois' student-athletes achievements were commendable and impressive. The combined GPA for all UI student-athletes last spring was a 3.14, and the GPA from last fall was a 3.25 . In the spring 2014 semester and fall 2014 semester, 28 student-athletes earned perfect 4.0 GPAs. Between the spring and fall semesters of 2014, an average of 64% of student-athletes earned GPAs over a 3.00.
Once again this year, Illini student-athletes were actively involved in the Champaign-Urbana community and elsewhere participating in services to support Hometown Heroes which is one part of the Douglas C. Roberts Illini CHAMPS Life Skills Program.
it is worthwhile to note that approximately 450 student-athletes were active in 150 plus events over the year and volunteered 5,000 hours visiting with our children in local schools and hospitals, senior citizens at nursing centers, and active in a variety of events relevant to organizations in the community including the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen and the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club.
